Live roulette guide to the wheel, the bets and the edge
Live roulette is simple to play and easy to misread. Every bet on a single-zero wheel carries the same 2.70% house edge, whatever it pays. This guide covers the layout, each bet with its probability, the variants you will find and why betting systems do not change the maths.

The live roulette wheel and layout
A European live roulette wheel has 37 pockets: the numbers 1 to 36, half red and half black, and a single green zero. The dealer spins the wheel one way and the ball the other, and the pocket where the ball settles is the result.
Inside bets sit on the number grid and cover one to six numbers. Outside bets sit around the grid and cover twelve or eighteen. The zero is where the house edge comes from: a straight-up bet pays 35:1 although there are 37 pockets, and the same shortfall is built into every other bet.
Inside and outside bets with payout and probability
| Bet | Numbers covered | Pays | Chance to win |
|---|---|---|---|
| Straight up | 1 | 35:1 | 2.70% |
| Split | 2 | 17:1 | 5.41% |
| Street | 3 | 11:1 | 8.11% |
| Corner | 4 | 8:1 | 10.81% |
| Six line | 6 | 5:1 | 16.22% |
| Dozen or column | 12 | 2:1 | 32.43% |
| Red or black, odd or even, high or low | 18 | 1:1 | 48.65% |
Notice what the table does not contain: a better bet. A straight-up wins rarely and pays a lot, red wins often and pays little, and over time both lose 2.70% of the money staked.
Roulette variants and what they change
European roulette
The standard dealer-spun, single-zero table. If a lobby also lists an American wheel with a double zero, its edge is 5.26%, almost twice as much.
Auto roulette
A real wheel spun by a machine, with no dealer. Rounds come faster, and the payouts and odds are unchanged.
Speed roulette
Bets stay open while the wheel is already turning, so a round takes about half the usual time. The edge is simply applied more often.
Lightning-style tables
A few numbers each spin receive multipliers of 50x to 500x. In return, an ordinary straight-up win on Evolution’s Lightning Roulette pays 29:1 instead of 35:1.
Why betting systems do not remove the edge
The Martingale tells you to double an even-money bet after every loss. Start with 50,000 VND on red. After six straight losses you are down 3,150,000 VND, and the system asks for 3,200,000 VND on the seventh spin, all to finish 50,000 VND ahead.
Six losses in a row happen about once in 55 attempts, so over a long evening that run is likely rather than freakish. Sooner or later the table maximum or your balance stops the doubling. Every spin still loses 2.70% of its stake on average, and a system only rearranges when the losses arrive.
Practical tips for a roulette session
- Work out the hourly cost first. Sixty spins at 100,000 VND is 6,000,000 VND staked, and 2.70% of that is 162,000 VND. A speed table with 100 spins an hour raises it to 270,000 VND.
- For longer playing time, stay on outside bets, which win almost half the time.
- On multiplier tables, remember the lower straight-up payout and keep stakes small.
- Read the table’s minimum and maximum bet, and set a loss limit you will not top up.
Roulette counts as live casino at Live Casino House, so it has no welcome bonus. The live casino reload bonuses and VIP cashback and rebate apply instead. Other tables are compared in the live casino overview, and the Sic Bo guide covers a dice game with a near-identical edge. Play is for adults aged 18 and over, and the responsible gaming page has a short checklist worth reading.
Live roulette FAQ
Is there a best bet in roulette?
Not on a single-zero wheel. Every bet, from a single number to red or black, has the same 2.70% edge. For a lower edge you need another game, such as live blackjack played with basic strategy.
What are neighbour bets on the racetrack?
The racetrack is an oval copy of the wheel for betting on numbers that sit next to each other on it. A neighbour bet is a set of straight-up bets placed with one tap, with the same payout and edge.
Do hot and cold numbers mean anything?
They are statistics about past spins, shown for interest. Each spin is independent, so a number that has not appeared for 100 spins has the same 1 in 37 chance on the next one.
How much should I bring to a roulette table?
For an hour on even-money bets, about 40 times your stake is a reasonable cushion against normal swings. At 50,000 VND a spin that is 2,000,000 VND, and it should be money you can afford to lose.
