Live blackjack guide with a basic strategy chart

Live blackjack is the one table game where your own decisions move the odds. Played with basic strategy the house edge is around 0.5%, and played on instinct it is several times higher. This guide gives you the rules, a compact chart and an honest look at side bets.

Live blackjack objective and card values

In live blackjack you play against the dealer, not the other players. You win by finishing with a higher total than the dealer without going over 21, or by staying in while the dealer goes bust.

Cards from 2 to 10 count at face value, picture cards count 10, and an ace counts 1 or 11, whichever helps. An ace with a ten-value card on the first two cards is a blackjack and pays 3:2, so a 100,000 VND bet wins 150,000 VND. The dealer has no choices: the house rule is to draw to 16 and stand on 17.

StandKeep your total and end your turn

Insurance is offered when the dealer shows an ace. In an eight-deck shoe the hidden card is worth ten about 30.8% of the time, while a 2:1 payout needs 33.3% to break even. That gap is a house edge of roughly 7.5%, so decline it.

Basic strategy for hard totals

A hard total has no ace counted as 11. The chart assumes a multi-deck shoe and a dealer who stands on all 17s. A table’s own rules, listed in its rules panel, can change a borderline cell.

11DoubleDouble against 7 to 10, hit against an ace
12Stand against 4 to 6, hit against 2 or 3Hit

For pairs, two rules cover most cases: always split aces and eights, and never split tens or fives.

Live blackjack variants

Seven-seat tables

Seven seats, one shoe, each player acting in turn. When every seat is taken you wait or use Bet Behind.

Infinite and unlimited-seat tables

Everyone receives the same starting hand and then decides separately. There is always room.

Speed blackjack

After the deal, whoever decides first is served first. Rules and odds are unchanged.

Bet Behind

You stake on a seated player’s hand and share its result. The decisions are theirs, so choose someone who follows basic strategy.

Side bets and what they cost

Perfect Pairs and 21+3 are the usual side bets, paying up to 25:1 and 100:1 on common paytables. Their house edge usually sits between 3% and 10%, against about 0.5% on the main hand.

One hundred hands at 100,000 VND with basic strategy cost about 50,000 VND on average. Add a 20,000 VND side bet with a 4% edge to each hand, and the side bet alone costs about 80,000 VND.

Etiquette and pace

A decision timer runs on every hand, and if it expires the table applies a default, normally stand. Be polite in chat and leave other players’ choices alone, because over time their decisions do not change your results.

At Live Casino House blackjack counts as live casino, so the live reload offers apply instead of a welcome bonus, and bonus-free play earns VIP rebate and cashback. Other tables are in the live casino guide, including live baccarat if you prefer a game with no decisions. Players must be 18 or over, and the responsible gaming page explains how to set a session budget.

Live blackjack FAQ

Does basic strategy mean I will win?

No. It is the mathematically best decision for each hand and brings the edge down to about 0.5%. You will still lose more hands than you win.

Can I count cards at a live blackjack table?

Not to any useful effect. Live tables use eight decks and replace the shoe long before the end, which removes most of what a count could tell you.

How should I play soft hands?

A soft hand holds an ace counted as 11, so the next card cannot bust it. Never stand on soft 17 or lower, and stand on soft 19 and above. With soft 18, hit only against a dealer 9, 10 or ace.

Should I take even money on a blackjack against an ace?

Even money is insurance under another name. It locks in 1:1, while declining pays 3:2 unless the dealer also has blackjack. Averaged over many hands, declining returns slightly more.
